Technology has evolved over the years to make our lives easier. Think about it. Right now, without much effort, you can book a hotel room for an upcoming wedding, hitch a ride home with a swipe of a finger, and transfer money to a friend. So, while there is no argument that technology, particularly smartphone apps, are making our lives easier, are they making them more secure? Or are they opening us up to bigger and scarier threats?
Recent headlines suggest that the latter may be true.
This week Dighton Massachusetts police warned residents of a scam circulating involving Venmo. In a Facebook post, police stated that scammers were targeting users of the digital payment app through text messages. The instructions were straightforward, log into a third-party site, and decline the request to avoid future charges. Once on the site, users were then asked to enter their personal information, including their phone number, Venmo log-in and password, as well as their bank card number. Recipients were falling prey to the con because the sophisticated scammers strategically used the same colors and fonts as the digital wallet app to help legitimize their efforts.
